Das US-Militär hat nach Medienberichten erneut einen Ballon entdeckt, der über den Westen der USA fliegt. Seine Herkunft sei unbekannt.
In den USA ist ein Jahr, nachdem ein chinesischer Ballon in den Luftraum eingedrungen war, erneut ein Ballon gesichtet worden. Er soll in großer Höhe unterwegs und im Westen des Landes gesehen worden sein. Es habe Meldungen aus Colorado gegeben, berichtet der US-Sender CBS News.
Dem Bericht nach sei das US-Militär alarmiert worden und verfolge mit Flugzeugen den Ballon. Er stelle aber derzeit keine Gefahr dar, sagten Vertreter dem US-Sender. Allerdings sei unklar, wo er herkomme und welche Zwecke der Über^ug habe.
US-Jets schossen vor einem Jahr chinesischen Ballon ab
Vor einem Jahr war ein chinesischer Ballon in den USA abgeschossen worden. Er war tagelang im Luftraum unterwegs gewesen. In den Trümmern wurden nach US-Medienberichten Spionagegeräte gefunden. Nach Darstellung aus Peking habe es sich um einen Wetterballon gehandelt, der vom Kurs abgekommen war. Am 4. Februar entschloss sich die US-Regierung, Kampfjets in die Luft zu bringen und ihn abzuschießen.
US-Präsident Biden geriet damals in die Kritik, weil er mit dem Abschuss gewartet hatte, bis der Ballon die Küste erreicht hatte. Offenbar wollte man verhindern, dass es am Boden zu Schäden durch Trümmer kam. Kritiker warfen Biden vor, er hätte das Fluggerät auch schon abfangen können, als es Kurs auf Alaska genommen hatte.
Unklar ist, welche Daten gesammelt wurden. NBC News berichtete zunächst, dass der Ballon erfolgreich Informationen über militärische Einrichtungen erhalten habe, sagte aber jetzt, dass diese offenbar nicht nach China übermittelt werden konnten.
Die USA schossen noch weitere Ballons ab, konnten aber keine Trümmer dnden und gingen später davon aus, dass sie nicht Teil eines chinesischen Spionageprogramms gewesen seien. In großer Höhe sind oftmals Wetter- und Forschungsballons unterwegs, die den Jetstream nutzen – ein Luftstrom, der sich in mehreren Bändern um die Erde bewegt.

Military says high-altitude balloon detected over Western U.S. doesn't pose a threat
The U.S. is tracking a small, high-altitude balloon that is drifting across the country but poses no threat to national security, U.S. officials and the military said Friday.
CBS News first reported that the military was tracking the balloon as it traversed the Western U.S. earlier in the day. NORAD, the military command responsible for air defense over the U.S. and Canada, later confirmed it had detected the object and said it was floating between 43,000 and 45,000 feet. Its presence prompted enough concern that the command sent aircraft to investigate.
"The balloon was intercepted by NORAD fighters over Utah, who determined it was not maneuverable and did not present a threat to national security. NORAD will continue to track and monitor the balloon," NORAD said in a statement. "The FAA also determined the balloon posed no hazard to flight safety."
One U.S. official told CBS News the balloon was expected to be over Georgia by Friday night. The official said the balloon appeared to be made of Mylar and had a small cube-shaped box, about two feet long on each side, hanging below it. Its origins and purpose remain unknown.
The developments come one year after tensions between the U.S. and China ratcheted to new heights after a Chinese balloon carrying sophisticated spying equipment flew over the continental U.S. for several days.
The Chinese foreign ministry claimed that the balloon was meant to collect weather data and had "deviated far from its planned course" due to high winds. The U.S. military ultimately shot it down off the coast of South Carolina on Feb. 4, 2023, and recovered the wreckage.
The spy balloon became a political headache for President Biden, who faced criticism from Republicans over his decision to allow it to transit over the U.S. for nearly a week before ordering it shot down. Biden officials said they waited until it was off the coast to minimize the risk to civilians on the ground. But lawmakers questioned why it couldn't have been brought down when it was near Alaska's coast, before crossing the U.S.
Though the Pentagon eventually concluded the balloon did not transmit information back to China, its presence put the U.S. military on high alert for other objects in U.S. airspace. Fighter jets shot down several unidentified objects over the U.S. and Canada over the following weeks.
The military couldn't find any debris from those objects, and the search was called off due to dangerous weather conditions. Mr. Biden said the unidentified objects were not believed to be connected to China's spy balloon program.
"The intelligence community's current assessment is that these three objects were mostly balloons tied to private companies, recreation or research institutions studying weather or conducting other scientific research," the president said.
The Chinese spy balloon became a major diplomatic point of contention between the U.S. and China, prompting Secretary of State Antony Blinken to cancel a trip to Beijing in February 2023. Blinken eventually made the trip in June to try to soothe rising tensions over a number of issues, including the balloon and the Chinese military's assertiveness in the South China Sea.

Ein US-Kampfjet vom Typ F-22 Raptor
Ein kleiner Ballon über dem US-Staat Utah hat die Luftüberwachung in Alarmbereitschaft versetzt. Kampfflugzeuge fingen den Ballon am Freitag in rund 13 Kilometern Höhe ab, wie der Sender CBS News unter Berufung auf das für die USA und Kanada zuständige Nordamerikanische Luftverteidigungskommando (Norad) berichtete.
Bei dem Abfangmanöver sei letzten Endes festgestellt worden, dass der Ballon keine Gefahr für die nationale Sicherheit oder den Flugverkehr darstelle. Das Flugobjekt werde aber weiter beobachtet.
Erinnerungen an angeblichen Spionageballon
Ein US-Beamter sagte CBS News, an dem Ballon sei ein würfelförmiger Kasten mit einer Kantenlänge von je 60 Zentimeter befestigt. Der mysteriöse Ballon weckt in den USA Erinnerungen: Vor gut einem Jahr hatten die US-Streitkräfte einen mutmaßlichen chinesischen Spionageballon über der US-Ostküste abgeschossen, Chinas Aktivitäten öffentlich angeprangert und damit für diplomatische Verstimmungen gesorgt.
Peking bestritt vehement, dass es sich um einen Spionageballon handelte, und gab an, der Ballon sei ein verirrter Wetterballon gewesen. Die Überreste wurden nach dem Abschuss durch einen Kampfjet vom Typ F-22 Raptor mit einer Rakete vom Typ AIM-9X Sidewinder vor der US-Küste South Carolinas geborgen und einer Untersuchung zugeführt. Am Ende erklärte das Pentagon, der Ballon habe keine Geheiminformationen gesammelt.

A U.S. official told CBS News that the object appeared to be a Mylar balloon traveling with a cube-shaped boxing hanging from it, CBS News reported. ABC 11 reported that an official said the balloon was 50-feet tall and carried an “unknown” payload.

The Twitter account Emergent Perspective, who says in their bio that they are a NORAD veteran,
said it exited the U.S. over South Carolina and “is currently over the Atlantic Ocean.”
