This mission is the first of four which will use identical Rocket Lab spacecraft to support Varda's in-space manufacturing. The second spacecraft has completed assembly, integration, and testing at Rocket Lab's spacecraft production facility in Long Beach, California, and is scheduled to launch in the coming months.

In a landmark decision that propels commercial space ventures into a new era, Rocket Lab USA, Inc. (NASDAQ: RKLB), a pioneer in launch and space systems, has received the green light from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for a groundbreaking mission. This approval paves the way for the return of Varda Space Industries' in-space manufacturing capsule, marking the first instance the FAA has issued a Part 450 reentry license for such a mission.

The mission involves a series of intricate in-space maneuvers and de-orbit burns conducted by a Rocket Lab-built and operated satellite, which has been hosting Varda's capsule in orbit. This initiative not only showcases the advanced capabilities of Rocket Lab's technology but also highlights a unique collaboration with the Department of Defense, allowing a commercial space mission to reenter on a government-owned range for the first time. The capsule, dubbed Winnebago-1, is slated to make its descent into the Utah Desert, culminating a mission that has seen more than eight months in space.

Scheduled maneuvers include an initial burn of the Curie engine on the evening of February 18, aimed at reducing the spacecraft's speed and positioning Winnebago-1 into its first staging orbit. Subsequent burns on February 20 and 21 will further adjust the spacecraft's orbit, ultimately guiding the capsule back to Earth.

These operations are not just a testament to Rocket Lab's engineering prowess but also to the potential of in-space manufacturing. Winnebago-1 has been instrumental in growing Ritonavir crystals, a significant development in the pharmaceutical industry, demonstrating the advantages of microgravity conditions for producing complex drug formulations.

Rocket Lab's spacecraft, a 300kg-class vehicle, has exceeded expectations by operating well beyond its intended orbital lifespan, a feat that underscores the durability and reliability of the company's design and manufacturing capabilities. Equipped with Rocket Lab's proprietary components and software, the spacecraft has flawlessly supported Varda's capsule, setting a high standard for future missions.

This venture is the first of four planned missions that will leverage identical Rocket Lab spacecraft to advance Varda's ambitious in-space manufacturing initiatives.
